Understanding the Importance of Mental Preparation

I believe preparing mentally for surgery is just as important as the physical preparation. It intentionally sets the stage for a positive surgical experience and aids in decreasing the unnecessary anxiety that can sometimes creep in when we aren't intentional with our thoughts.

Mental preparation helps you to approach the surgery with a calm and focused mind, reducing anxiety and stress. It not only allows you to be more present throughout the whole magical experience, it may also lead to other unexpected benefits ultimately resulting in more of a smooth and easy recovery.

By understanding the importance of mental preparation, you can take proactive steps to ensure that you are prepared for your breast reduction surgery and creating the most positive all round experience for yourself.

Developing a Positive Mindset Muscle

Developing a positive mindset is a key aspect of mental preparation for surgery or any major life event. It involves training your mind to only focus on the positive outcomes your desire and noticing your thoughts and beliefs that may not yet be aligned with this view.

One way to develop a positive mindset is to get clear on where your current thoughts and feelings are not serving you. You feel it in your body when there is fear, doubt and worry that is being ignored. Once you identify these unhelpful thoughts and feelings, you can ask yourself "What would be a better thought or feeling?" or "What is the opposite of this thought or feeling?" With this incredible information you can create personalized and powerful health affirmations. Repeat these positive statements such as "I am resilient and strong" or "I am eager for the surgical transformation" to reinforce positive beliefs about your body and the surgery.

Another effective technique is visualization. I like to close my eyes and imagine what a successful surgery and a smooth recovery look like and feel like to me. Visualize yourself feeling confident and happy with the results. This visualization exercise can be very enjoyable and will help reduce anxiety.

In addition, you can also write out all of the other benefits that will come once you are healed and living in your new desired state. I kept thinking about what it would be like to wear spaghetti straps and strapless bras. Remember, developing this positive mindset muscle takes practice, patience and consistency. Be kind with yourself and keep soaking in these new positive thoughts and beliefs.

Tracking Your Health Journey

Tracking your health journey before and after surgery can be a helpful tool for mental preparation and acknowledgement.

Start by keeping a journal to document your thoughts, feelings, and progress leading up to the surgery. This can help you gain clarity and reflect on your motivations and goals. You can also ask yourself "What can I do this week to help my surgery preparation or to ensure I have a smooth recovery?"

During the recovery phase, continue to track your progress. Note any improvements in your physical well-being and emotional state. Celebrate small milestones and stay in that energy until you fully recognize yourself. We are often too quick to pass by our progress and only focus on what still needs to be done. We are missing the point if we don't see the joy filled moments along the way. This tracking can also be used as motivation to keep moving forward.

Tracking your health journey allows you to see the positive changes happening in your body and mind, boosting your confidence, belief in yourself and overall mental well-being.

Building a Support System

Having a strong support system in place is crucial for mental preparation and post-surgery recovery.

Reach out to friends, family, or support groups who have gone through similar experiences. Their insights and feedback can be surprising and extremely helpful. Share your questions, uncertainties, and hopes with them. Their empathy and understanding can provide comfort and reassurance.

Consider involving a trusted loved one in your surgical journey. Having someone by your side during consultations, pre-operative appointments, and the recovery phase can provide emotional support and help alleviate any anxiety. I was lucky enough to have my husband and my mom (a retired nurse) by my side for each step of the process.

You can also seek professional support from therapists or counselors who specialize in surgical experiences. My family doctor was incredibly informed and guided me through what to expect from the perspective of appointments and timelines. They often provide guidance, coping strategies, and a safe space to express your emotions.

Remember, building a support system is not a sign of weakness but rather a brilliant approach to ensuring you (future you) have a smooth experience. Surrounding yourself with caring individuals can make a significant difference in your mental well-being. I would also add that not talking about your experience and journey with those not involved as your support network will eliminate the exhaustion that comes with keeping a million people in the loop and informed on your personal experience. You do not have to tell anyone you do not want to and this decision is 100% yours.

Visualizing a Successful Outcome

Visualizing a successful outcome had a powerful impact on my mental preparation for surgery. I truly believe it heightened every aspect of my experience. While visualization shifted my focus to a brighter future, it also made me more present in my daily life, allowing me to savor each moment of my transformation journey.

Take some time each day to imagine the positive changes that you desire to achieve through your breast reduction surgery. Visualize yourself feeling confident, comfortable, and happy with your new appearance.

Use all your senses to make the visualization more vivid. Imagine how your body will feel, how your clothes will fit, and how effortlessly you'll move. I loved visualizing the relief of no longer having back pain and the joy of having even better posture.

Visualizing a successful outcome can help you build confidence, reduce anxiety, and create a positive outlook for the surgical journey ahead.
